It already happened
I paid with Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, or Apple Cash
Report it inside the app itself, not to a support number you found by searching.
These apps treat most payments as final. Report it anyway, inside the app, today. A payment still marked Pending can be canceled. A purchase may be covered. A payment someone else sent from your account counts as unauthorized under federal rules.
If it’s happening now
They’re still messaging you. Stop replying. Screenshot the chat and their profile before you block anyone.
They say one more payment will unlock, refund, or “verify” the first. It won’t. Don’t send it.
“Support” is on the phone, or on your screen. Hang up. If they had you install an app so they could see your screen, turn the phone or computer off and use another device. Someone is on the line or on my screen right now. Afterward: I let someone control my computer.
The payment still says Pending or Unclaimed. In PayPal, open it in Activity and tap Cancel. In Apple Cash, open Wallet, tap your Apple Cash card, tap the payment, tap it again, then Cancel Payment. In Venmo or Cash App, open the payment and look for Cancel. Most payments arrive within seconds, so it’s usually not there.
What to say
-
I sent money through the app to someone who turned out to be a scammer. I want it reported as fraud, the payment reversed if you can, and the account it went to flagged. I need a case number.
-
I didn't send this. Someone got into my account with a code they tricked me into giving them. I want it handled as an unauthorized transfer under Regulation E. I need a case number.
-
The money went from this card through a payment app to a scammer. Can you dispute it, and flag any more charges from the app? I need a case number.
-
Can you send me that decision in writing, with what you based it on?
Report it inside the app
Have the amount, the date, the username you paid, and screenshots ready. Start from the app, not a search:
- Cash App: tap the profile icon, then Support, then Start a Chat.
- Venmo: on the Me tab, tap the payment, tap Need Help?, pick what happened, then Submit Issue. To reach a person: Me, then Settings, then Get Help, then Chat With Us. Ask for an agent.
- PayPal: on paypal.com (type it in yourself), go to the Resolution Center, then Report a Problem, and pick the payment.
- Apple Cash: support is handled by Green Dot Bank. Call the number below, or start at getsupport.apple.com.
Ask them to reverse the payment and flag the account it went to. Write down the case number.
Search ads and business listings carry fake numbers for these apps. Whoever answers asks for your code, a “test” payment, or control of your phone.
Rather call? Use these, which each company lists on its own site. Not a number from a search, a post, or a message.
PayPal Customer Service
Unauthorized PayPal payments, or a payment you were tricked into.
Paid with Zelle? It runs through your bank’s app, so call your bank: I sent a bank transfer, wire, or Zelle.
If someone else sent it from your account
If they got in with a code or password you gave them and sent the money themselves, Regulation E (the federal rule that covers payment apps) counts it as unauthorized, even though you handed it over. The CFPB names this case. Do this now, from a device you trust:
- Change the app’s password and your email’s.
- Sign out devices you don’t recognize. In Cash App: profile icon, Your Devices.
- Check that the phone number and email on the account are still yours.
Then report each payment as an unauthorized transfer, in the app and to the bank or card linked to it. The most you can owe is lowest if you report within two business days of finding out. Wait past 60 days from the statement that shows it, and you may not get later losses back.
Call the bank or card behind it
If the money came from a linked bank account or card, call the number on the back of that card too. Ask whether they can dispute it, and ask them to watch for more charges from the app. If it came out of your app balance, skip this.
Tell the app either way. Venmo says a dispute with your bank doesn’t count as reporting an unauthorized payment to Venmo. For a purchase, PayPal says you can pursue its dispute or your card company’s, not both at once.
If they say you authorized it
If you pressed Send yourself, expect to hear that you authorized it. For a payment to a person, getting it back is then up to the company, and the answer is often no. Ask anyway. If they say no:
- Ask for the decision in writing.
- File a complaint with the CFPB. It sends your complaint to the company, which generally answers within 15 days.
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)
Mon–Fri 9 a.m.–6 p.m. ET, except federal holidays
Complaints about a bank, card, payment app, or credit bureau, including one that won't help after fraud.
If it was a purchase
- PayPal, sent as goods and services: can be covered by Purchase Protection if the item never came or was nothing like the listing. Open a dispute within 180 days of paying (within 30 days of delivery if it came but wasn’t as listed). If the seller doesn’t fix it, escalate it to a claim within 20 days of opening it, or the dispute closes and can’t be reopened. Sent as friends and family: not covered.
- Venmo, paid to a business profile or with “Turn on for purchases” switched on: can be covered by Purchase Protection. Open a dispute within 180 days. Without that switch, it isn’t covered.
- Picked up in person: Venmo excludes most of these. PayPal won’t cover an “it never came” claim, but may cover an item you picked up that isn’t what was listed.
- Cash App and Apple Cash: both say you may not get your money back for something you paid for and never received. Report it anyway.
What happens next
Chat may start with a bot; ask for an agent. PayPal says it usually decides a claim within 14 days; some take 30 or longer.
That’s the urgent part. The rest can wait a few hours.
- Turn on the app’s sign-in protection: a passkey or an authenticator app if it offers one, text codes if that’s all it has. In Cash App, also turn on Security Lock (profile icon, Security, Security Lock). It asks for your PIN or face before money goes out.
- Save the payment screen, their name or handle, and the messages. Save evidence without spiraling.
- Report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and at ic3.gov if it started online. Where to report it.
Anyone who offers to get the money back for a fee is running a second scam. That includes people who say they’re from the app, the FBI, IC3, the FTC, or a law firm. Someone offers to get my money back.
If you’re 60 or older, or helping someone who is, the National Elder Fraud Hotline assigns a case manager to help with the reports. It won’t call you first.

What it looks like
You want to report a Cash App payment you sent to a scammer, so you search for Cash App's phone number.

The same number is in the ad, the answer at the top, and the business listing. What do you do?
Show the answers
- Wrong move Call it, but don't give them your PIN or sign-in code Refusing the code isn't enough. Fake support also asks for a "test" payment, a payment to "unlock" your account, or a screen-sharing app. Cash App says it never asks for a test transaction.
- Best move Close the search and start a chat from inside Cash App In the app: profile icon, Support, Start a Chat. Chat inside the app can only reach Cash App. Anyone can buy an ad or set up a business listing, and the same number showing up three times proves nothing.
- Okay Tap the cash.app result and use the number on that page That's Cash App's own page, and the number on it is real: Cash App says it has only one. Check that the address reads cash.app first. The app skips the search altogether.
A number you searched for isn't a number you already had. Start from the app, or type the company's address in yourself.
You paid $240 for a camera lens through PayPal with a credit card, as goods and services. It didn't come, so four days ago you opened a dispute.
Tue 6:12 PM
I shipped it Monday! Your dispute is holding my money and I can't pay for supplies for my other orders. Can you close it today? Tracking is 9400 1000 0000 0000 0000 01.
If it's not there by Friday I'll refund you myself.
What do you do?
Show the answers
- Wrong move Close the dispute. You have tracking now PayPal says a closed dispute can't be reopened or escalated to a claim. If the lens never shows, there's nothing left to escalate.
- Best move Leave it open and look up the tracking number on the carrier's own site A tracking number in a chat proves nothing until the carrier's own site shows the package heading to your address. If the lens arrives, close the dispute yourself. PayPal closes it for you 20 days after you opened it unless you escalate it to a claim, so check before then.
- Okay Leave it open, and also dispute the charge with your credit card PayPal closes its own dispute if you also dispute the charge with your card company. The card dispute can still work, but you get one path, not both.
Leave a PayPal dispute open until the item is in your hands.
A $300 Cash App payment just landed from a name you don't know. A text follows.
Text Message
hi so sorry!! i sent you $300 on cash app by accident, it was supposed to go to my landlord. can u please send it back? its my rent money. god bless
The $300 is in your balance. What do you do?
Show the answers
- Wrong move Send them $300 from your balance Cash App describes this one: after you send it back, the sender disputes the original $300 with their bank or card. They get paid twice, once by the bank and once by you.
- Best move Open the payment in Activity and tap Refund Cash App's own advice: refund the payment, don't create a new one. A refund returns that same payment instead of sending new money.
- Okay Leave it, and report it to Cash App support from the app Safe. Support can reverse it. On Venmo, this is the move: Venmo says to contact support so it can reverse the payment.
Undo the payment that came in. Don't send a new one to replace it.
What they’ll ask for
Real support for these apps asks for none of these. Stop and reach the company from inside its own app.
“Read me the code we just texted you.” Cash App, Venmo, and Apple all say they never ask for it. Whoever has it can get into your account.
“Send a $1 test payment so we can verify you.” Cash App says it never asks for a “test” transaction.
“Install this app so I can process your refund.” It lets them see and use your phone. Venmo says it never asks to access your device or to install another app.
“Send it as friends and family. It saves the fee.” A purchase sent that way has no Purchase Protection.
“I sent you money by mistake. Send it back.” Don’t send a new payment. In Cash App, open the payment and tap Refund. In Venmo, leave the money where it is and contact support.
